Video Game Design

Video game design is one of the most difficult and rewarding forms of art that can be achieved using a computer. It requires equal amounts of technical skills and artistic talent, as well as hard work to achieve a great result.

Game design starts out with a thoroughly thought out plan that must include a very large number of aspects that come together to create a final product. The process involves an idea of the game to be created and a number of development processes, followed by testing, redesigning, troubleshooting and bug fixing.

Many elements go into creating a game and a video game can have different styles and features. Shooters, strategy games, racing games, role-playing are just some of them. Single and multiplayer are often left to the user, which means more functionality must be built in to the game. Characters, each with his or her own story and appearance give the game value.

So, designing a video game takes a designer (or rather more of them, especially if the game is very complicated) through a tiresome process. The first thing to decide is the type of the game and the features it will provide. After that, a story must be written, along with the characters. The design process includes world design, system design, content, level and user interface design.

A heavy amount of computer programming goes even into the simplest games. A complex video game requires more time, more planning and usually more designers. Designing the world in which the game takes place and the characters users will come to know and love are key elements. It’s not enough to write a story; a video game must have alternative stories based on the level, the difficulty, the characters and other elements in the game. After that it’s on to the level design.

After a video game design is finished, it must be properly tested and tweaked for bugs in programming, commands or graphics. It is a long process, but a very beautiful one.
