Fashion Design
Fashion design is one particularly popular form of design that has become a true form of art over the years, building an entire industry from scratch into an incredibly powerful force.
No one can escape fashion. It’s in every piece of clothing we wear day to day, to the office, at home, in every situation or in the company of anyone we meet. While earlier man has always needed to cover oneself up to keep warm and protect himself from the elements, fashion only developed very late – the 19th century to be more exact.
While the Greek style dresses from many centuries ago are known to us and remain very fashionable today, in the time of the myths they weren’t considered to be a result of fashion design. Until a man named Charles Frederick Worth decided to put his name (or label) on the garments created by him – and that’s when fashion design was born.
Fashion has since become a major part of many people’s lives, many live for it, even more work in the fields related to it and fashion designers have come to be known all over the world for the quality of their products and especially the high prices they are tagged with.
Fashion design is basically split in three major categories. Mass market – which caters to every pocket, using inexpensive materials, produces clothes for various sizes and body types, in large quantities. Ready-to-wear is a step up into exclusivity and higher prices. This sort of fashion design defines clothes that are produced in smaller quantities, are of better quality and are presented in fashion shows. The last category is Haute Couture (meaning “high fashion” in French) which is individually tailored per client. It is the most time consuming sort of design and the most expensive, because of the very good quality in both products and techniques used.
Fashion design is an area so vast that it contains all sorts of clothing and accessories, for both women and men. There are several types of designs available to both sexes depending on the time of day or occasion or on age. There is day wear, evening wear, lingerie, kids wear, sportswear, knitwear, outerwear, bridal wear and, of course, accessories.
All designs are very different and change from season to season. A cornucopia of colors, fabrics and cuts are included in every piece of clothing of a fashion line. Articles are usually released in collections at the beginning of a season where models wear the clothing and present it on a runway. Designers are constantly working to improve and renew fashion. Fashion is also recyclable, as many styles from past years reemerge, and are given a new twist to create one of the most colorful and intriguing forms of art there is.
